The Lost English Girl by Julia Kelly
In 1935, Viv--raised Catholic--hastily marries Joshua, who is Jewish, because she is pregnant. Viv and Joshua barely know each other, and when Viv's mother offers Joshua money to leave Viv after the wedding, he agrees, figuring he can uses the money to move from Liverpool to New York and follow his dream of being a jazz musician. Viv, ostracized by the community, spends her days living in her childhood home, her only happiness being the love she has for her daughter, Maggie. As World War II intensifies, Viv makes the difficult decision to send Maggie to the countryside to keep her safe from the bombs that are being dropped on England. Joshua, meanwhile, comes back to England and joins the air force when he doesn't get the success he had hoped for in the states. The Lost English Girl follows the lives of Viv and Joshua through the war and after, as both learn to balance their own needs and happiness in a time of tumult and loss.
