A Sunlit Weapon by Jacqueline Winspear

When pilot Jo Hardy, a member of the Air Transport Auxiliary, is shot at from the ground while ferrying a Spitfire to another location in Britain, she is stunned and wonders who could be the culprit. With her friend Diana in tow, Jo goes to the spot where she feels the shots came from and finds African-American soldier Matthias Crittenden bound and gagged in a barn. After Matthias tells the women that a friend he was with was taken by some men and then a fellow female pilot is shot down and killed, Jo hires private detective Maisie Dobbs to look into the incidents and figure out who's responsible. Maisie discovers that it could be connected to those who are trying to assassinate first lady Eleanor Roosevelt on her visit to England during this fall of 1942. A Sunlit Weapon is the latest book in the Maisie Dobbs series and is satisfying to those readers who enjoy catching up with Maisie and those in her circle.

Chorus by Rebecca Kauffman

The Shaw family lives on a farm in Virginia--Jim and Marie and their seven children. Chorus recounts the family's life in the first half of the twentieth century, especially how the children's lives are affected by Marie's mental illness and death when they were young. We also see the Shaw siblings grow into adulthood and become parents themselves. A great choice for book groups, those enjoying novels about family relationships, in addition to being a read-alike for Ask Again, Yes and The Dearly Beloved.

Nine Lives by Peter Swanson

Nine people receive a list in the mail with nine names on it including their own. Everyone has a different reaction upon seeing the list, some wonder if they know other people on the list, others completely disregard it, but no one takes it too seriously except FBI Agent Jessica Winslow. Then, an individual who's name is on the list is murdered. Who could have wanted him or her dead? What ties the people together whose names are on the list? In Nine Lives, Swanson has written another page turner that you won't want to put down until the end.

All the Queen's Men by S.J. Bennett

It's the Fall of 2016 and a female employee at Buckingham Palace is found dead by the swimming pool. Was the death an accident or murder? Could the death have something to do with a series of poison pen letters that are being sent to a number of women who work at the palace, including the Queen's Assistant Private Secretary Rozie Oshodi? The Queen, with help from Rozie, decides to secretly investigate in order to put things right. While I thoroughly enjoyed all the details about Queen Elizabeth's daily life and thoughts and her relationship with Rozie, the mystery itself was overly long and I wished the secondary characters were more well-developed.

The Lost Summers of Newport by Beatriz Williams, Lauren Willig, and Karen White

In 1899, Ellen gets a job (under false pretenses) as music teacher to heiress Maybelle Sprague. She is helping to prepare Maybelle to sing for an Italian prince who is visiting Newport for the summer. Maybelle's older brother hopes that when the prince hears Maybelle's voice it will convince him to propose to her. Then, in 1957, the reader is taken back to Sprague Hall for the story of Lucky, who is unhappily married to Stuy Sprague, an alcoholic philanderer. Lucky wonders if she should stay in the marriage for the sake of their young daughter, Joanie. Fast forward to 2019 where Andie is working on a home improvement reality show where they are renovating three rooms in the decrepit Sprague Hall. The members of the Sprague family that Andie encounters while working there are demanding and entitled. In The Lost Summers of Newport, the reader is treated to three storylines revolving around the Sprague family and wonders how all the characters are related. It will be published in May.
